Points, streaks and the leaderboard

Points, streaks and the leaderboard

Points make the calendar a little game: colleagues earn points for opening doors on their day, answering quizzes, voting and entering raffles. Streaks reward coming back day after day, and a leaderboard shows the ten people with the most points. All of it is optional.

The Points and leaderboard section

You'll find these settings on the calendar's Points tab and in step 4 of the setup guide.

Switching points on or off

Points is on for new calendars. Switch it off for a calendar without any competition: doors, quizzes, polls and raffles all still work, but nothing is counted and there's no leaderboard.

Tip: If you're unsure, talk to your works council before the calendar goes live. Points can't be switched on or off once the first door has opened.

Points per action

Action Default Notes
Opening a door on its day 10
Opening a door later 0 Only when doors can be opened after their day.
Each correct quiz answer 5 Per question answered correctly.
Entering a raffle 5 Once per raffle.
Voting in a poll 5 Once per poll.

Each value can be 0 to 1,000. An action worth 0 simply earns nothing.

Every action earns its points once. Opening a door twice, double-tapping or sending something again after being offline never earns more.

Streaks

A streak counts how many doors someone opened on their day. With Streaks on, people earn bonus points when their streak reaches a length you set:

Streak length Bonus points (default)
3 5
7 15
14 30
24 75

Add up to ten bonuses with Add a bonus, or remove one with its bin icon.

How a streak is counted:

  • Only doors opened on their own day count. Opening a door later never adds to a streak.
  • A streak survives one missed door. Two missed in a row start a new one. So missing a door, opening the next and missing another keeps the streak going.
  • Each bonus is paid once per person: the first time their streak reaches that length.

Participants see their streak as "Streak: 14 days" next to their points.

Leaderboard

With Leaderboard on, everybody can open a list of the ten people with the most points, with their names from Flip and their points. Below it, each person sees their own rank, even if they're not in the top ten.

The leaderboard, as participants see it

  • People with the same points share a rank.
  • Only people with points are listed. Everyone who takes part is ranked, admins included.
  • It updates right away with every point earned.
  • You can switch the leaderboard on or off at any time, also while the calendar is live.

Because the leaderboard shows names, mention it in your announcement. The leaderboard isn't available if Flip has switched it off for your organisation.

Letting people decline points

With Let participants decline points, every colleague is asked once, on their first visit after the first door opened, whether they want to collect points.

The question participants see on their first visit

  • Collect points: they collect points and appear on the leaderboard.
  • Continue without points: they collect no points, don't appear on the leaderboard, and see no points or streaks. They can still open every door and take part in everything, and their activity still counts in your analytics.
  • Their choice is final: they can't change it later, and you can't change it for them.

The Analytics tab shows how many people collect points and how many declined, as totals.

This option is only available if Flip has switched it on for your organisation. Ask your Flip contact if you'd like to offer it, for example because your works council asks for it.

When points are fixed

Points, every value, streaks and bonuses, and Let participants decline points can change until the first door opens. From then on they're fixed: Points are fixed once the calendar is live. That way, everyone plays by the same rules all season.

Only the Leaderboard switch can still change while the calendar is live.

When the calendar ends, nobody earns points any more. Points already earned are never taken away, not even when you change a door after it opened.

What participants see

  • Their points and streak at the top of the calendar, and a Leaderboard button.

  • Tapping their points opens Your points: how far they are from the next streak bonus, where their points came from (doors on their day, correct quiz answers, poll votes and raffle entries, streak bonuses), their rank if the leaderboard is on, and How to earn points with the values and streak bonuses you set. Before someone has earned any points, it shows only How to earn points. Each person sees only their own points there; no admin view shows them.

Your points, as a participant sees them

  • At the bottom of each door, a small badge such as "15 of 25 points", and "+30 streak bonus" when a bonus was earned. Tapping it lists what the door paid and what is still open in it, for example "Opened on its day +10" and "Quiz · 3 questions, up to +15". A door opened later says "no points" when that earns nothing. The second number is what the door pays on its day, so a door opened later shows "0 of 10 points" rather than "0 of 0".

    A door's points, unfolded

  • After a quiz, "You earned 15 points." or "No points this time."
