Editing doors

Editing doors

Each door is one day of your calendar. It has a title, an optional text, an optional image or video, and a door type that decides what people can do behind it: read, answer a quiz, follow a link, enter a raffle and more. This article covers what every door has in common. The door types have their own article.

The Doors tab

The Doors tab lists every door with its type, the day it opens and its status.

The Doors tab

  • Complete means nothing is missing. 3 things missing (in red) means the door blocks publishing until you fix it. 2 suggestions (in amber) are worth a look but don't block anything.
  • The filters above the list show All doors, doors that Need work, doors that are Not done yet and doors that are Already open.
  • Search by title or door number.
  • The โ‹ฎ menu of a door has Edit and Preview on its day, which shows the calendar as it looks on that door's day.

Click a door's title to edit it.

The door editor

The editor shows the door's settings on the left and a live preview on the right.

The door editor with its preview

From top to bottom:

  1. What's missing, when something is: see below.
  2. Door type: see Door types.
  3. Language: the language you're editing. See Languages.
  4. Title and text.
  5. Header image or video.
  6. The door type's settings, for example Quiz settings.

The arrows at the top and in the footer go to the previous and next door.

The preview shows the door with your unsaved changes, in the language you're editing:

  • Open, Closed (but opened) and Locked show the door's three states: the open door, its tile after someone opened it, and its tile before its day.
  • The phone and desktop icons switch the preview's size.
  • The sun and moon icons switch between light and dark mode.

Nothing you do in the preview counts: no points, no answers, no votes. A quiz still shows which answers are right, with the explanations. Poll results and shared goal figures in the preview are made-up examples.

Title and text

Title and text with the formatting toolbar

  • Title: required in the default language, up to 80 characters. Opened doors show it on their tile, so keep it short.
  • Text: optional, up to 2,000 characters. A counter appears when you're close to the limit.

Format the text with the toolbar or with Markdown:

You want Toolbar Or type
Large text Text size โ†’ Large text ## Heading
Medium text Text size โ†’ Medium text ### Heading
Bold B (Ctrl/Cmd+B) **bold**
Italic I (Ctrl/Cmd+I) *italic*
A link Link (Ctrl/Cmd+K) [text](https://โ€ฆ)
A bulleted list Bulleted list - item
A numbered list Numbered list 1. item

Links must start with https://, or flip:// for a link into the Flip App. Images, tables and HTML aren't possible in the text: use the header image for pictures.

Header image or video

Each door can show one image or one video above its text. Choose Nothing, Image or Video under Show above the text.

Header image settings

Image

  • Image description: required. Screen readers read it out to people who can't see the image. Describe what the image shows, in up to 250 characters.
  • Caption: optional, shown under the image, up to 200 characters. Use it for what the image doesn't say, such as who or where.
  • Put text into the door's text, not into the image: text in an image is hard to read on a phone.

Video

Paste the video's link from your browser's address bar. The editor's hint names the video services Flip has approved for your calendar, usually YouTube and Vimeo. Show the video checks that it plays. Your colleagues see a play button; the video only loads when they tap it.

If a link is refused with Videos from this website aren't allowed., the service isn't approved. Ask your Flip contact.

Per language

The image or video is set for each language. Switch the language and use Copy from โ€ฆ to reuse the default language's image or video. A translation without one is shown without it.

Images

Images for doors and the cover go through the same steps:

  1. Click Upload an image and choose a JPEG, PNG or WebP file of up to 15 MB.
  2. Crop it. For a door, pick a Shape: As uploaded (if the image already fits), 4:3, 3:2, 16:9 or 2:1. A cover is always 16:9. Drag the frame to move it, or a corner to resize it. With the keyboard, the arrow keys move it and + and โˆ’ resize it.
  3. Click Crop and upload.

The crop dialog

The calendar makes the image ready for phones: it turns it upright, removes hidden data such as the camera's location, and stores it in two sizes, with the calendar's other data rather than in Flip.

After uploading, Good on mobile means all is well. Check on mobile lists what to look at:

  • About 20 % of the image is cut off here. Phones show a narrower part of wide images. The preview shades the part that's cut off.
  • The image is 180 KB and loads slowly on mobile data. Pick a simpler image or crop closer.

These notes never block publishing.

What's missing

When something is missing, a What's missing list appears at the top of the editor. Each line says what to fix, with a link that takes you there.

The "What's missing" list

  • Red lines block publishing, for example a missing title in the default language, a raffle without an entry deadline or a quiz question without a correct answer.
  • Amber lines are suggestions, for example an unfinished translation. A colleague with that language sees the default language for this door until it's done.
  • Switch to German (or another language) appears when the problem is in another language.

While the calendar is a draft, the footer's Missing: 2 ยท Go to next button jumps from one red field to the next.

Saving

  • While the calendar is a draft, every change is saved automatically a moment after you stop typing. The footer says Saved. Even an incomplete door is saved, so you can come back later. If something can't be saved, for example a link that doesn't start with https://, the field is marked and the rest is saved.
  • Once the calendar is published, use Save changes and Cancel in the footer. A door with red lines can't be saved until they're fixed.

Marking a door as done

While the calendar is a draft, Mark as done at the top tells the setup guide you've checked this door. Mark as done & next in the footer marks it and opens the next door. Mark as not done undoes it. Once a door is done, the footer offers Back to the setup guide.

"Done" is just for you. Saving a door doesn't mark it, editing a done door doesn't unmark it, and a door that isn't done can still be published. Once the calendar is published, the buttons disappear.

Changing a door after it opens

You can still change a door after it opened, for example to fix a typo. Saving asks Save this door?, because people may have seen the old version.

  • Points people already earned are never taken away or recalculated.
  • In a quiz, people who already answered keep their points. New answers are scored against the new version.
  • In a poll, you can still edit the options' text, but not add or remove options.

While the calendar is live, every tab says This calendar is live. People see every change right away.
