Languages and translations

Your calendar can be written in one language or in several. Each colleague sees it in their Flip language if you've added it, otherwise in the calendar's default language. Nothing is translated automatically: you write or paste every translation yourself.

The Languages section on the Settings tab

Which languages are available

The calendar supports 22 languages: Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish and Ukrainian.

Buttons and messages of the calendar itself, such as "Leaderboard" or "Door 3 opens on …", are already translated into all 22. What you write, the welcome text and the doors, is in the languages you add.

Default language

The default language is marked (required). Every text must exist in it, and everybody whose language you haven't added sees it.

A new calendar starts with your own admin language as its default, if it's one of the 22, otherwise German. The ready-made calendar exists in German and English only, so in another language it starts with empty texts. See Ready-made or empty.

You can switch the default language until the first door opens. After publishing, the new default language must already have every text. Switching never fills in or replaces a text.

Adding a language

  1. Open Settings, or step 1 of the setup guide while it's still there.
  2. Click Add language and pick one from the list.
  3. Click Save changes.

You can add languages at any time, also while the calendar is live. A new language starts empty, also German or English after the ready-made calendar: it's only added in the languages chosen in the setup guide's first step.

Writing translations

Wherever there's text, you'll find language pills above it: on the Appearance tab for the welcome texts, and in every door. Click a language to edit its texts.

Language pills in the door editor

  • A pill marked red has something missing that blocks publishing (only possible in the default language).
  • A pill marked amber has a translation that isn't finished yet. Colleagues with that language see the default language for that text until it is.
  • In the door editor, a field whose text is still missing in this language has an amber border and a translate icon. Once you've clicked into it and left it empty, it says Missing in German (or another language) for a required text, and Not in German yet. The door is shown without it. for an optional one.

Header images and videos are also set per language. In a translation, Copy from English (or your default language) copies the default language's image or video with its description, so you don't have to upload it again.

Before publishing, step 7 of the setup guide lists every language that isn't fully translated yet, with a link to each place that's missing.

Tip: Write everything in the default language first and add translations at the end. The setup guide's month view marks doors that still need a translation.

Which language people see

For each text, the calendar picks the first of these that is complete:

  1. The colleague's language in Flip.
  2. The languages of their browser or phone, in their order of preference.
  3. The calendar's default language.

"Complete" means every required text of that part is filled in. For a door, that's the title and the door type's required texts, such as quiz questions and answers, plus the image description if the door has an image in that language. Optional texts like the door's text or an image caption are simply left out if they're missing.

The calendar decides this separately for the welcome text and each door. So if only some doors are translated, a colleague can see one door in their language and the next in the default language. Texts are never mixed within one door.

The buttons and messages around your content follow the colleague's Flip language, even if your content is shown in the default language.

Removing a language

Click the language's remove button in Settings, confirm, and click Save changes. Saving deletes that language's texts and images in all doors. This can't be undone. The default language can't be removed.
