Appearance: welcome text, colours and design

The Appearance tab decides what your colleagues see first: the welcome title and text, the cover image, your colours, the design and a few effects. A preview on the right shows your changes right away, before you save.

The Appearance tab with its preview

Click Save changes at the bottom of the page to keep your changes. Cancel undoes everything since the last save.

Welcome texts

The welcome title is the calendar's heading, and the welcome text sits right under it. Use them to say what the calendar is about and when to come back.

The welcome texts

  • The title is required in the default language, up to 120 characters.
  • The text is optional, up to 1,000 characters. Line breaks are kept.
  • Use the language pills to write each translation. A translation is shown once it has a title; a missing welcome text is simply left out.

Colours

The calendar uses your organisation's colours from Flip. They're imported when you create the calendar. If your colours in Flip change, click Import colours from Flip next to the Colours heading to get the new ones.

Colours and cover image

Import colours from Flip brings in Flip's colours for light and dark mode and stores them straight away. It doesn't touch the cover image. When you then save, your own colour overrides are replaced by Flip's colours. Click Cancel instead if you only wanted to refresh the colours you don't override.

You can override five colours, separately for light and dark mode:

Colour What it colours
Closed door The doors that haven't been opened, and the calendar's accent colour.
Number on a closed door The door number on a closed door.
Opened door Doors someone has opened.
Text on an opened door The number and title on an opened door.
Links Links in door texts.
  • Enter a colour as #rrggbb, for example #0f5c5c, or pick it with the colour swatch.
  • Clear a field to go back to Flip's colour.
  • Overrides must stay easy to read. Text and its background need a contrast of at least 4.5:1 (the WCAG AA standard). If an override is too pale, saving tells you which one, for example A colour override has only 2.8:1 contrast. It needs at least 4.5:1. Flip's own colours are already checked by Flip.

Tip: Override as little as possible. Flip's colours are made to work in both modes.

Light and dark mode

The two cards at the top, Light and Dark, switch between the two modes' settings. Each card has a switch:

  • Show light mode to participants and Show dark mode to participants are both on by default. Each colleague then sees the mode they chose in Flip or on their device, and can switch in the calendar.
  • Switch one off if your organisation only uses one mode. Everyone then sees the other one, and the calendar has no switch. One mode always stays on.

Cover image

The cover sits at the top of the calendar, above the welcome title. You can set it separately for light and dark mode, or use the same one.

  • Upload an image: JPEG, PNG or WebP, up to 15 MB. You then crop it to 16:9. See Images for how uploading and cropping work.
  • Use the Flip logo: without a cover image, the calendar shows your organisation's logo from Flip. Background behind the logo puts it on a soft panel. The logo can only come from Flip; to change it, change it in Flip and click Import logo from Flip. When you then save, the logo replaces your cover images in both modes; click Cancel to keep them.
  • Copy from light mode or Copy from dark mode reuses the other mode's image.
  • Size sets how wide the cover is shown, from 50% to 100%. The default is 75%. At 100%, a logo fills its panel and a photo the full width of the screen.
  • Remove the image removes the cover image. While the logo is shown, it switches the logo off. Without either, the calendar starts with the welcome title.

A Good on mobile tag means the image works well on phones. Check on mobile lists what to look at, for example a large file that loads slowly on mobile data.

Design and effects

The Options section sets the calendar's decoration.

The Options section

  • Design:
    • Snowflakes (default): snowflakes and small stars, neutral for every culture.
    • Stars: stars of different sizes.
    • Garland: a garland with bulbs, holly on the doors.
    • Minimal: no decoration.
  • Falling snow: gentle snow falls over the calendar.
  • Highlight today's door: today's door wiggles and shimmers until it's opened.
  • Show locks on closed doors (on by default): a small lock on doors that can't be opened yet or were missed, so they stand apart from the ones that can.

Falling snow and the highlight are hidden for people who turned on reduced motion on their device.

When your colleagues see changes

Changes show as soon as you save. Someone who has the calendar open sees them when they come back to it after a minute or more, pull down to refresh or tap the refresh button.

Once the calendar is shown in the app, the Appearance tab reminds you: People already see this calendar. Changes to the welcome texts and design show right away.
