AI Builder Best Practices

The AI assistant in the Flow Builder isn't just for the first draft — you can keep talking to it throughout building, to add steps, fix errors, and explain things you're stuck on.

Describing a flow for the first time

  1. Give the AI as much of the picture as you can in one go — what should happen, in what order, and any conditions along the way. For example:

"I want to build an onboarding flow to my company, Flip, it should send out helpful links and also a daily checklist of things to do for the new starter. The checklist should be tasks within Flip that the flow creates daily. Before creating the tasks, check with the flow user's manager that they're the right tasks."

  1. Review the complete, connected first draft the AI returns.
  2. Check for anything it flags as needing your input — for example, a manager lookup or posting to a channel.

Refining a flow with follow-ups

  1. Send a small, specific prompt for each change you want, rather than starting over. For example:
    • "How can I add in the flow user's name? I want to pull it from their profile"
    • "I want to schedule message 1 to go out at 1pm today"
    • "Can the schedule send to New Starter’s channel"
    • "Make each of the items listed in the day 1 checklist separate tasks in Flip"
  2. Or give a direct instruction when you already know what you want: "connect user select to Get User 1", "order my messages correctly."

Fixing build errors

  1. Paste the exact error text back into the chat, for example:

"Fix the error: Wait 1: no valid fire time within the maximum search horizon — relax offset, weekdays, or time window."

  1. If something's still broken, just say "fix my errors". The assistant re-checks the whole flow and either fixes what it can or tells you what still needs your input.
