Manual translations let you publish posts in multiple languages – with texts you provide yourself, for example professional translations, instead of automatic translation. This is ideal for legally sensitive or high-priority communication where every wording matters. Users automatically see the post in their language whenever a matching translation exists.

Activation & language selection

As an admin, you activate the feature directly in the Admin Console by defining which languages content creators can use to manually translate a post:

1. Open the Admin Console.
2. Go to Settings > Languages.
3. In the "Manual translations of posts" section, select the languages you need under "Languages for manual translation" and save your changes.

The default language is always included automatically – it is the original language and cannot be removed. The languages selected here are directly available to content creators as language tabs when creating a post. This selection is independent of the labelling languages and automated translation. Creating a post with translations (Flip Web)

1. Create a new post as usual.
2. Click Translation in the bottom bar of the editor. The "Add translation" dialog opens.
3. Select the original language (the default language is pre-selected) and the target language under "Translate to". Confirm with Add translation.
4. A language bar appears above the editor: the original language first, followed by all translations. Use "+ Add translation" to add further languages.
5. Switch between languages by clicking the respective tab and enter the title and content per language.
6. Publish the post as usual.

Good to know:

• Empty translations are flagged with a warning: "This translation is empty. Add content before publishing." Fill them in or remove them before publishing.
• Use the × on a language tab to remove a language. All content of that language will be lost – a confirmation dialog protects you from accidental removal.
• The title image and attachments apply to all languages. Images and videos within the text can differ per language.
• For polls, you translate the question and answer options per language. Adding, removing or reordering options and changing poll settings is only possible in the original language.

Creating a post with translations (mobile app)

1. Create a new post as usual.
2. Tap the translation icon (𝓐) in the bottom toolbar.
3. In the first step, select the original language of the post (the default language is pre-selected), and in the second step the target language of the translation.
4. A language bar appears below the navigation bar. Tap a language to edit it, or tap "+ Add translation" to add further languages.
5. Enter the title and content per language and publish the post as usual.

The behaviour for empty translations, removing languages, media and polls is identical to Flip Web.

How users see translated posts

If a post has manual translations, users automatically see it in their language whenever a matching translation exists. If there is no matching translation, the original language is shown.

A language selector appears below the post:

• In Flip Web it opens as a dropdown; in the mobile app, users tap the language label below the post.
• The selector lists all available translations in their native language names (e.g. Deutsch, Español, Français). The active language is marked with a checkmark.
• Users can switch between the available languages at any time – for polls, the question and answer options switch along.

If the user's language is not available as a manual translation, the selector additionally offers a "Translate to [language]" option. This translates the post automatically and marks it with the 𝓐 icon. Via "Show original", the user can return to the original version.

Notes

• For regional language variants, the exact variant is shown first (e.g. de-AT), otherwise the base language (de).
• Manual translations can be edited or deleted at any time. If a translation is deleted, automatic translation or the original applies again for that language.
• No automatic translation is created for languages with a manual translation – the manual version always takes precedence.
• Manual translations are available for posts. Comments, chat messages and events continue to be translated automatically on demand. You can find more about this here.
