Passkeys in Flip – sign in securely without a password

Passkeys are a new, secure sign-in method in Flip. Instead of entering your username and password every time, you simply use your device's unlock method – for example Face ID, Touch ID, or your device PIN. It's not only easier, but also more secure.

Important: Passkeys do not replace your existing password. They are set up as an additional sign-in method. Your current login (e.g. username + password or SSO) remains fully available. You can freely choose which method to use each time you sign in.

What are passkeys?

A passkey is a digital key stored on your device. It provides an alternative sign-in method alongside your existing login – faster and more secure than entering a username and password.

Benefits:

  • No password to type – a quick scan or PIN entry and you're in
  • More secure than passwords – passkeys cannot be guessed, stolen, or intercepted by phishing
  • Two factors in one step – a passkey covers both device possession and biometric verification at the same time
  • Your existing login stays the same – you can always continue using your username and password

Setting up a passkey (during login)

If your company has enabled passkeys, you will be automatically prompted to set one up the next time you log in. Here's how:

  1. Open the Flip App and tap Log in.
  2. A system dialog appears – tap Continue to start the sign-in process.
  3. Enter your Username and tap Continue.
  4. Enter your Password and tap Continue.
  5. Accept the Privacy & terms of use, if prompted.
  6. The "Register passkey" screen appears. Here you'll see the benefits at a glance:
    • Secure and easy sign-in
    • Log in with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device PIN
    • Your passkey is safely stored
  7. Tap Register.
  8. Your device shows a dialog – confirm with Add Passkey and scan your face or fingerprint (or enter your device PIN).
  9. Done! Your passkey is set up and you're signed in.
Tip: You can skip the setup by tapping "Remind me later". You'll be prompted again the next time you log in.

Setting up a passkey (in the app)

Even if you're already logged in, Flip may prompt you to set up a passkey. When you open the app, a prompt will appear in Settings with the title "Increase your security" and the message "Secure your profile in just 5 seconds!".

  1. Tap Improve security.
  2. A system dialog appears – tap Continue to start the setup process.
  3. The "Register passkey" screen opens. Here you'll see the benefits:
    • Secure and easy sign-in
    • Log in with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device PIN
    • Your passkey is safely stored
  4. Tap Register.
  5. Your device shows a dialog – confirm with Add Passkey and scan your face or fingerprint (or enter your device PIN).
  6. Done! Your passkey is set up.
Good to know: If you tap "Remind me later", the prompt will reappear after 24 hours. It will be shown up to 5 times in total. After that, you won't be asked again. We recommend setting up your passkey right away – it only takes a few seconds and makes your login significantly more secure.

Signing in with a passkey

Once your passkey is set up, you can sign in without a password:

  1. Open the Flip App and tap Log in.
  2. Tap "Sign in with Passkey".
  3. Your device shows a dialog – tap Use Passkey and confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device PIN.
  4. Done! You're signed in.

That's it – no username, no password needed. If you'd rather use your previous method, you can simply enter your username on the login screen as usual.

Troubleshooting

The passkey dialog doesn't appear or fails immediately

Your device needs an active passkey provider: iCloud Keychain (iPhone/Mac), Google Password Manager (Android/Chrome), or Windows Hello (Windows). If any of these is disabled, no passkey can be created.

What you can do:

  • iPhone/Mac: Settings → Passwords → Password Options → enable iCloud Keychain
  • Android: Settings → Passwords & accounts → is Google Password Manager active?
  • Windows: Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options → set up Windows Hello
  • Chrome: chrome://settings/passwords → enable "Use passkeys"

If the setting looks correct but it still doesn't work, a company policy (e.g. MDM on managed devices) may be blocking the passkey provider. In that case, contact your IT department.

My passkey doesn't work on another device

Passkeys only sync between devices when you're signed into the same account on both devices and sync is enabled.

Check the following:

  • Apple: Are you signed into the same Apple ID on both devices? Is iCloud Keychain active?
  • Android/Chrome: Are you signed into the same Google account on both devices? Is sync enabled in Google Password Manager?
  • Windows: Passkeys can be synced via Microsoft Password Manager (requires Edge 142+ and a Microsoft account). You need to complete a one-time setup on each device (Settings → Accounts → Passkeys).

If sync isn't working: simply sign in on the new device with your username and password, then set up a new passkey there.

I'm being asked to set up a screen lock

Passkeys require an active screen lock on your device (PIN, pattern, fingerprint, or face recognition). Without a screen lock, passkeys cannot be created or used.

  • Android: Settings → Security → Screen Lock
  • iPhone: Settings → Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode)

This is a security requirement of your operating system, not Flip.

"Passkey sign-in failed" – even though I have a passkey

This can happen if you're using a third-party password manager (e.g. Bitwarden, KeePassXC) that doesn't yet support a specific technical feature.

What you can do:

  • Temporarily disable the third-party provider's passkey feature so your device uses the built-in provider (iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager).
  • Alternatively: create a new passkey and deliberately select your device's built-in provider.

My passkey was "not recognised", even though it's shown on my device

This happens when your passkey was deleted on the server side (e.g. by an admin or during a reset). The passkey on your device is now outdated and no longer works.

What you can do:

  1. Delete the old passkey from your device:
    • iPhone/Mac: Settings → Passwords → find the Flip entry and delete the passkey
    • Android/Chrome: chrome://password-manager/passwords or Google Password Manager
    • Windows: Settings → Accounts → Passkeys
  2. Sign in with your username and password.
  3. Set up a new passkey – you'll be prompted automatically.

I accidentally saved my passkey in the wrong manager

If you have multiple password managers active (e.g. iCloud Keychain + Chrome + 1Password), your passkey may end up stored in an unexpected location and not be offered during the next login.

What you can do:

  • Check all active password managers on your device to see if the passkey is there.
  • If you find it: you can continue using it from there, or delete it and create a new one.
  • Tip for the future: Pay attention to the dialog where you choose the storage location when creating a passkey. You can set a default provider on your device:
    • iPhone: Settings → Passwords → Password Options
    • Android: Settings → Passwords & accounts → Default provider

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does my existing login change?

No. Your existing password and sign-in method (e.g. SSO) remain fully available. The passkey is an additional alternative – you simply choose which method to use when you log in.

Do passkeys work on all devices?

Passkeys work on iPhones (with Face ID or Touch ID), Android devices (with fingerprint or device PIN), and in web browsers. A current operating system is required (iOS 16+, Android 9+).

What happens if I get a new phone?

If you use an iPhone, passkeys are automatically transferred to your new device via iCloud Keychain. On Android devices, passkeys sync via your Google account. If that doesn't work, you can sign in with your password and set up a new passkey.

Can I use passkeys on multiple devices?

Yes. Passkeys sync via iCloud Keychain (Apple) or your Google account (Android). When you sign in on a new device with the same account, your passkey is automatically available.

What do I do if Face ID / Touch ID isn't working?

You can use your device PIN instead. If that doesn't work either, sign in with your username and password as usual.

I wasn't prompted to set up a passkey. Why?

Passkeys need to be enabled by your company. If you aren't prompted, your company may not have activated the feature yet. Contact your IT department or your Flip representative.

Can I delete my passkey?

You can currently manage your passkey through your device settings (see "Troubleshooting" above). Management directly within the Flip App is coming in a future update.

Is this secure? What if someone has my phone?

Passkeys are tied to your device's unlock method. Without your face, fingerprint, or PIN, no one can use your passkey – even if someone has your phone in their hands.
