Manual Translations & Multilingualism

Language settings at a glance

Under Admin Console > Settings > Languages you control how Flip handles languages and translations. The page is divided into four sections: Default language, Labelling languages, Automated translation and Glossary.

Default language

The default language is the primary language of your app. It works as a fallback when translations are missing. Menu items and user groups are initially created in this language.

Labelling languages: translating elements manually

Labelling languages define which languages system admins can use to manually translate elements that are created and configured by administrators:

  • Display names of user attributes (profile fields)
  • User groups
  • Menu items based on user groups

If user groups are not enabled, only user attributes can be translated. Since you maintain the translations yourself, key terms of your organisation appear in every language exactly the way you want.

Enabling labelling languages

  1. Navigate to: Admin Console > Settings > Languages.
  2. Under "Labelling languages": add the languages you need and save your changes.
  3. Add a translation: then edit the element you want to translate (e.g. a user attribute), select one of the enabled languages and enter the translation.

Users will automatically see the label in their device language. If no translation exists for a language, the default language is shown as a fallback.

You can find more information on translating display names of user attributes here.

Automated translation

Here you select the languages that Knowledge Base articles are automatically translated into upfront. Users will see the articles directly in their device language. They can still translate into other languages on demand directly within the app.

This selection is independent of the labelling languages: a language can appear in both lists, in only one, or in neither.

You can find more information on translations in the Knowledge Base here.

Posts, comments and chat messages are translated on demand, independently of this setting. You can find more about this here.

Glossary

In the Glossary you define terms that should not be translated – for example brand names, product names or internal terms of your organisation. Glossary terms are protected in all automatic translations in Flip.

You can find more information on the glossary for translations here.
